Community Workshops & Programs

Workshops can happen anywhere with anyone, the idea being to make music as accessible as possible to all, the main requirements being a power source and some willing people. The other thing of course is a story to tell, a line to hum or an idea to express, and we believe this is inside everyone waiting for an opportunity to come out.
Participants are guided through the song-writing process in whatever form or medium best expresses them. This requires traversing genres, age groups, locations and issues; from young to old, hip-hop to country, love to politics. People are encouraged to use all the skills and hidden passions they have, the hope being that the outcome will not be a generic musical token of participation, but a true expression from within them.

Client & Strength Focused

Songs will be about what is meaningful to people and will be produced and translated from their ideas about life, music, and meaning. A group may come together to say something about themselves collectively, to make a statement, to tell the world what they’re on about, or just have some fun.

The opportunity also exists for anyone involved in a workshop to learn more about song-writing, recording, and music production. There are no secrets or magic tricks to it. True music is a shared expression of all people.

Examples of Community Based Programs

SoundED facilitators have been developing and running community based programs over the last 15 years locally, nationally, and internationally. Here are a few examples:

  • A training and recording project in Timor Leste. This was a collaborative project developed with Realtone and PLAN International which trained 6 local Timorese youth workers in sound recording and production, recorded 18 songs and produced a CD titled "Ne'e Hau Nia Moris".
  • A music / arts program in a residential Drug & Alcohol rehabilitation facility where group participants are encouraged to express their experiences through music. This program also has a strong focus on training and skill development.
  • A youth group for young people whose parents are experiencing a mental illness. This group participates in a yearly program where they write an original song and produce a music video to go with it over two days of workshops.

Let us create a program that's right for you.

We can tailor make a program that is right for your organisation and target group. From young people wanting to produce and record some hip hop, to indigenous communities wanting to develop a cultural or health promotion resource.
