SoundED is a unique and innovative approach to engaging young people in education. SoundED school based programs typically operate one day a week for eight to ten weeks during a term. Over this time students are guided through workshops aimed at writing, performing, recording and producing their own original music onto CD, Soundcloud or Youtube.

We believe that each school (and student) is one of a kind, so each SoundED program can be tailored through initial consultation to meet the individual needs of each school, both in terms of outcomes and group processes used.

Some examples of programs that have run in the past are:

  • A 3 - 5 day intensive music / video workshop where students write, record and produce their own song and video clip. Intense, action packed and loads of fun with many opportunities for students to try out different roles and learn about song composition, sound engineering and video production.

  • A Primary School where the day was broken into 4 different sessions, with 4 different groups coming in weekly for eight weeks. The main outcome of this program was a 4 song CD with artwork individually designed by each student. All up 97 students were involved.

  • A specialist teaching unit where students were able to work through a group song then develop their own individual songs based on their personal visions of creative expression.

These differences are based primarily on the number of students engaged in the program. Low student numbers create a greater capacity to discover and develop individual students’ strengths, while larger numbers broaden the access and impact of the program.

Key components of SoundED programs include:

  • Group building activities that encourage participation and engage students in the song creation process. We use games and small groups to organise roles and tasks.
  • Introduction to Rhythm and Melody.
  • Instrumental exploration. Students are introduced to a range of different wind, string and percussion instruments and given opportunities to experiment with sound creation.
  • Basic composition and song structure. Students are guided through the deconstruction of songs compositionally and instrumentally to identify song parts and instrumental layers, after which an original song composition is created, based on agreed styles.
  • Lyric writing exercises and thematic development. Students are guided through various creative writing exercises which are then transformed into lyric.
  • Sound recording skills and methods. Students are introduced to basic recording techniques looking at signal flow, using a range of different microphones and using multi track recording programs.
  • CD cover / poster design and creation. Through a mixture of photographic design and individual artwork, students develop their own CD covers or posters to promote the recordings.
  • Video clip production. Students are involved in the conception, shooting and production of a video clip to accompany their songs.

All equipment needed is provided for the workshops including instruments, recording equipment, CD’s, printing etc...  Nothing else will be asked of the participating schools.

"Wayne can work musical magic through his program... he transports students from their everyday reality to a world of infinite possibilities and excitement...once students have started the program their self esteem soars as they own a finished product of which they will be proud of for the rest of their lives. Wayne has an innate ability to talk to the students whilst instilling great values and ideas. We initially became involved with Wayne through a grant, but when that dissipated we found we still needed his input so much we were prepared to hock our financial souls to keep him on board..."
